About the Composers

In 1713, precisely 300 years ago, a historical passing of the torch took place. In Rome, the great composer and violinist, Arcangelo Corelli died at the age of of sixty. He was indisputably the most important and influential composer in Europe at the time, and his concerti grossi were renowned as the perfection of a century of musical development.

In the same year in Venice, the young Antonio Vivaldi composed a collection of twelve violin concerti, his opus 4, which he called “La Stravaganza,” for its daring expansion of tonality and technical virtuosity. With these concerti, Vivaldi established himself, and the solo concerto, as the new musical force to be reckoned with.
